THE 2024 LEXUS GX 550

The most extreme off-road vehicle available from Toyota’s luxury division is the all-new 2024 Lexus GX 550. A complete redesign of Toyota’s chassis deployment has benefited the body-on-frame SUV; the new Lexus GX shares its foundations with the new Lexus LX 600 and the freshly resurrected Land Cruiser. The 2024 model, which is the first comprehensive redesign of the Lexus GX in 14 years, is a genuinely revolutionary car in terms of both capability and appearance.

Overview

With its revamped powertrain and plenty of more contemporary technologies, the new GX550 rides on an entirely new platform, and its tough exterior is essentially the only thing that connects it to its antiquated predecessor. The boxy, Land Cruiser-inspired body of the new model seems to age nicely, which is fortunate because the GX has a reputation of having long product cycles.

Body Build, Chassis and Trim

The GX sports a double-wishbone front suspension and a multi-link rear suspension, both of which are mounted on a lighter and more robust ladder frame chassis. Four-wheel drive and a two-speed transfer case with a limited range are standard on all GX models. The Luxury and Overtrailversions also come equipped with an Adaptive Variable Suspension (AVS) system for further sophistication. An Electronic Kinetic Dynamic Suspension System (E-KDSS) with roll bars that electronically disengage while off-roading is another feature of overtrail vehicles. This increases the wheel travel limit to 24.45 inches, enhancing the GX’s range of on- and off-pavement performance.

The most competent variant of the 2018 GX is the all-new Overtrail grade, which has a locking center and rear differential in addition to 8.9 inches of ground clearance. Only a locking center differential and 8.66 inches of ground clearance are features of the other GX grades, Luxury and Premium. A Multi-Terrain Select (MTS) system with settings for Dirt, Sand, Mud, Deep Snow, and Auto is also included with Overtrail versions. Premium and Luxury grades have 20- or 22-inch wheels, respectively, while overtrail vehicles have 18-inch wheels with 33-inch all-terrain tires.

Engine Transmission and Performance

A brand-new 3.4-liter twin-turbocharged V6 engine mated to a 10-speed automatic transmission powers the GX 550. This engine has a rated power of 479 pound-feet of torque (between 2,000 and 3,600 rpm) and 349 horsepower (between 4,800 and 5,200 rpm). The V8 engine of the previous GX, which had a maximum output of 301 horsepower and 329 pound-feet of torque, is easily surpassed by those numbers.

With mixed driving, the new GX 550 is rated at 15 city mpg, 21 highway mpg, and 17 mpg. Additionally, it has a 9,096-pound maximum towing capability. With a maximum towing capacity of 6,500 pounds and EPA ratings of 15 city/19 highway mpg, the GX 460 was discontinued.

Interior Infotainment and Connectivity

A standard 14-inch center touchscreen with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto highlights an entirely new interior design. A 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster, which the driver may customize to suit their preferences, sits in front of the driver. Four USB-C ports, a 10-speaker audio system, and heated and ventilated front seats are among the additional standard amenities of the base Premium model. A panoramic sunroof, a head-up display, heated second-row seats, massaging front seats, and a 21-speaker Mark Levinson sound system are available to purchasers on higher specification levels.

Interior Comfort and Cargo Space

In Premium or Luxury trims, the GX can accommodate seven passengers, and the third row of seats has a motorized folding feature. The Overtrail grade has a maximum passenger capacity of five, meaning that only freight can fit behind the second row of seats. With two more storage pockets beneath the floor of the cargo area, Lexus claims that the new GX has better interior and cargo capacity behind the second row. There are up to 12 cupholders and a 120-volt AC outlet accessible.

Driver assistance and other

Features

A few of the SUV’s functions, like the navigation system, require users to employ voice commands or Lexus Intelligent Assist. Though we would have preferred simpler access to manual input options, the system performed as good as or better than any current voice command technology. When using the Multi-Terrain Monitor on the GX, the huge touchscreen also functions as an underbody camera display, which we found to be quite useful. When off-roading, this function lets drivers view what’s directly in front of and below the front bumper.

Lexus Gx 550 Price Ranges

The 2024 Lexus GX ranges in price from $64,250 to $81,250, depending on the model and options.

The Premium goes for $64,250, Premuim+ $69,250, Overtail$69,250, Luxury $77,250, Overtail+ $77,250 and lastelyLuxury+ $81,250.
